Abstract Online surveys of consumers have been widely accepted as quick, modern, and reliable ways of obtaining valuable information, yet many in the healthcare industry believe that similar surveys of physicians, while also quick and modern, are not reliable. There is concern that physicians who respond to a survey via the Internet answer questions differently than those who respond via a direct mail survey, because, it is believed, the universe of online respondents represents a biased sample. A two-arm comparative survey of randomly selected oncologists was conducted via both the Internet and direct mail to determine whether answer to a variety of questions would, in fact, differ significantly. Only when questions about Internet usage were asked did statistical differences in responses arise.
